A Letter From the Sr. Vice President, Michael Riggs

When you think of J&J, you think of high quality truck bodies. And for good reason! We’ve been manufacturing J&J bodies for over 50 years. However, in this issue of The Long Hauler, we are going to highlight some of the interesting custom welding and fabrication projects we’ve been working on across a variety of industries. At Somerset Welding & Steel (the parent company of J&J Truck Bodies & Trailers), we’ve invested in equipment and technology that extend our capabilities beyond standard body fabrication. From sub-arc and robotic welding to specialty presses and shears, our fabricators and designers have the right equipment for just about any job. Our experienced workforce offers decades of mechanical, hydraulic and advanced welding skills to support complex integration projects. Most recently, we built manifold trailers that incorporate hundreds of feet of high pressure piping for a well services company. Somerset Welding & Steel is also collaborating with another firm to offer state-of-the art dust control solutions at active drilling sites. And in keeping with our expertise in truck bodies, we are manufacturing custom steel bodies for Morooka, a new customer that provides rubber crawler products to the construction, environmental, and farm industries. Our enthusiastic and can-do approach on these highly specialized projects does not mean that we are not body builders first. The J&J Truck Bodies & Trailers brand is the heart of our company. Our custom fabrication is just an example of how we can be a true partner to your business. As we reflect on the past year, we want to thank all our customers for allowing us to help them grow and succeed.

Beyond Trucks - Custom Fabrication Projects

Somerset Welding & Steel is manufacturing steel vessels for six different models of mine safety chambers. The chambers provide oxygen, food, water, and safe haven for miners in case of emergency. The walk-in chambers are equipped with air-locks to purge poisonous mine air prior to entering the main safety chamber.

Here, J&J welders work on a steel bed that will be installed on rubber tracked carriers as shown below. The carriers are used by rail and utility companies to clear rough and swampy terrain, making it ready for installation of oil and gas pipelines, railroad tracks, and general construction.







Recently, J&J completed 4 highly customized manifold trailers used in hydraulic fracturing operations. J&J worked closely with our customer through requirements development, design, finite element analysis
(FEA), manufacture, and commissioning of the trailers. Frequently, J&J and the customer’s team collaborated on design and analysis through web conferences, allowing for faster decision making and eliminating time consuming and costly travel.

A Volvo VNL 780 tractor will pull the 53-foot expandable Proven trailer, which was built to serve as a mobile experience and educational facility for Volvo dealers and customers.

Natural Gas Usage by US Trucks Likely to Increase Dramatically

Hunter Truck Sales, Smithfield, PA, provided this Peterbilt chassis and J&J mounted a polished aluminum 19 and a half ft. dump body with 72 inch sides. DynaHauler Material Haulers (MH) are J&J’s most popular brand. According to a recent article on Reuters.com, the use of natural gas in U.S. trucks and fleet vehicles could skyrocket over the next two decades as low prices and new infrastructure provide incentive to switch to the cheap fuel. This research report was released last month. Record increases in U.S. natural gas production, thanks to prolific shale deposits, have pushed prices to 10-year lows this year, and they are likely to remain depressed, making it an attractive alternative to more expensive diesel for the foreseeable future.

Winch Tractor Earns the Wow Factor

This winch tractor was featured at J&J’s outdoor booth at the Eastern Oil and Gas Show late last summer where it attracted a lot of attention. Wow, awesome, gotta have that truck, were just some of the comments we heard during the event. Morooka Hosts OpenHouse

Morooka America, a manufacturer of rubber track carriers, has commenced operations out of their new manufacturing facility located in Hanover County, Virginia. The 50,000 square foot plant is the company’s first American operation and is expected to create up to 50 new jobs over the next 3 years, with an expected output of 100 machines annually. Ron Wright, J&J regional sales manager, attended the Open House last summer where several of the track carriers were on display. Morooka America is a subsidiary of the Richmond Group LLC, a holding company for construction-related firms geared around the Morooka product and located in Ashland, Virginia. Morooka USA - East is the U.S. headquarters for Japan-based Morooka Co.

How to Spec a Dump Body

When spec’ing a dump body to get the most bang for your buck, there are many questions to consider. First, what is the primary function of the unit? Will it be used in the summer for road stabilization or culvert cleaning, or in the winter for plowing or leaf collection? When you know these basics, the rest follows. What is your load capacity? Factor the legal weight and distance of the typical route. The least amount of time in the garage equals more profitability for you. Your operators: can they handle the equipment you are buying? When you are planning on the life of your vehicle, you want to factor in your maintenance facilities and staff, and how much you would like to get back out of it when you do sell it. An economical way of extending the life of your truck is to have it refurbished at J&J Truck Bodies and Trailers. Be sure to consider how you intend to make the purchase – will you bid it from one supplier or multiple suppliers? Will you add this purchase to an existing contract?

Once you’ve answered your basic questions regarding your best needs, it’s time to pick your truck! What size do you need? Again, consider the legal weight of your load, and performance you require from the truck. What you will be hauling, and how often, will dictate the design and materials you should require on your dump body. What options do you want? A Letter  from the Vice President of Sales – Jerry Johnson

We have always known that even though we sell work trucks, we are really in the people business. At J&J, we want to make the best truck bodies, and have the best people making, selling, and servicing them. 

Over the next year, you’ll see even more attention paid to customer service at J&J. We are organizing our business and our systems to serve our customers’ needs better. One example of this is aftermarket parts sales. Our parts team is now located at J&J Truck Equipment where they are stocking more parts than ever before, and manufacturing replacement parts on site.  In most cases, you can walk in to J&J Truck Equipment and walk out with the parts you need, with no downtime.

As customers, you have a role in helping us improve. After you buy a piece of equipment from J&J, you receive a Customer Satisfaction Survey. We pay a lot of attention to these surveys and we need your input on what we do well, and where we need to improve. Real Trucks Wear Pink

A big pink dump truck attracts a lot of attention. That’s exactly what Virginia Paving Company, a division of The Lane Construction Corporation, is hoping for - more attention towards breast cancer awareness and research. Ron Wright, J&J’s South Atlantic regional sales manager worked with Tidewater Mack and Virginia Paving to spec an aluminum material hauler. As always, J&J customized the unit to meet the customer’s needs, but the J&J paint shop was a little surprised at the color choice for the chassis and toprail. Pink. After a few double-checks to make sure the color code was correct, news of the “pink truck” spread like wildfire at J&J. So we called Russell Haynes, Assistant Mechanical Supervisor at Virginia Paving, to find out the story behind the pink truck.

We learned that The Lane Construction Corporation makes community service and involvement a high priority for employees in all of its divisions. In the regions where it does business, Lane grows with the community, and helps the community grow. Each Virginia Paving Company plant location is empowered to support local projects both financially and with employee volunteers.

The pink truck fits into the Virginia Paving “Dump Trucks for Charities” program where charitable organizations can advertise on Virginia Paving trucks. This truck will be part of the Virginia Paving Norfolk plant fleet and will be in service every day in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, and it will participate in local parades and events.

The pink truck, which will be driven by a female driver and will carry breast cancer awareness decals, will be a very visible reminder to everyone who sees it, that the need for breast cancer research and support is great.

Ron Burton, Senior Plant Manager at the Norfolk plant, was a big supporter of adding this pink breast cancer awareness truck into the fleet because the effects of breast cancer are so far reaching. According to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, it is estimated that in 2012, over 220,000 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer and there will be nearly 40,000 deaths as a result of breast cancer.

Other Virginia Paving plants support other awareness campaigns, too. The Alexandria plant has an aluminum J&J dump truck with a giant puzzle on the cab to promote autism awareness and the Loudoun/Sterling plant has a pink J&J Susan G. Komen tank truck. Other Lane companies also participate.

At J&J, we commend The Lane Construction Company for their contributions to their local communities.  We value their business and enjoyed building the pink truck, which brightened up our lot and created a positive buzz. We’re certain it will get people talking about breast cancer awareness in Virginia too!

Keeping it  Green At MetalPro

METALPRO, Inc., a recycling company in Virginia, sent their Mack truck to J&J where it was mounted with a steel DynaHauler Material Hauler (MH). The J&J body is 24 feet in length, 96 inches wide, and 84 inches high. The truck, which also included a Prentice grapple crane, will be used to transport and recycle scrap, tires, and metal from car dealerships, collision centers, and fleet garages in DC, Maryland, and Virginia. METALPRO currently operates a fleet of 10 heavy-duty crane trucks that are all mounted with J&J bodies. The company is committed to doing its part in keeping the environment as green and friendly as possible.

A government agency in Virginia will use our MDC truck for light construction hauling and road maintenance work. Medium-duty dump bodies are extremely versatile and can be used for many applications including landscaping and waste hauling. Caterpillar says the new CT15 Engine offers Cat CT660 Vocational Truck customers greater horsepower and torque for solid performance in demanding applications. The CT15 joins the CT11 and CT13 as the third engine option for the versatile Cat CT660. The 15-liter engine is available with as much as 550 horsepower and 1,850 lb-ft of torque, which will power the Class 8 truck through heavy-hauling jobs and demanding terrain.


Freightliner Trucks introduced the 2014 Cascadia® Evolution Class 8 truck model. Powered by Detroit™ and featuring some of the most advanced aerodynamic enhancements in the industry, the Cascadia Evolution delivers up to an additional 7 percent improvement in fuel economy over an EPA 2010-compliant Cascadia equipped with a first generation aerodynamic package.

Hino Trucks teamed up with Miller Industries to provide one lucky tow operator a chance to win a fully loaded 2012MY Hino model 258ALP with a Century 12 Series LCG Carrier. The truck is part of a giveaway that benefits The Professional Wreckers of Florida (PWOF) Education and Legislation Programs. This year’s winner was Joe Spina owner of Direct Towing out of Sarasota, Florida. Joe, already has two Hino 258 model trucks in his fleet.
  
Isuzu Commercial Truck of America, distributor of America’s low-cab-forward trucks, announced a new process that will enable Isuzu dealers to more quickly convert or modify gasoline-powered NPR-HD (14,500-lb.GVWR) trucks for their customers. Dealers can select a ship-thru option to indicate that they have arranged to have the trucks modified at one of two independent modification centers. This new process will eliminate unnecessary dealer-incurred transportation expenses and will shorten the amount of time to obtain alternative fuel conversions.

Kenworth shared that the new Kenworth T680 recently was the special guest star at the “Exotics at Redmond Town Center,” a unique automotive event. The organized event features 100 to 150 exotic cars and 300 to 400 automotive enthusiasts every Saturday morning from April to October. Organizers heard about the new Kenworth T680, which is considered exotic among Class 8 trucks. So, it was only natural for the group to extend a special invitation to Kenworth to exhibit the T680 at an exotics car show.

Mack Trucks named TransEdge Truck Center of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, its 2011 North American Distributor of the Year. The annual award recognizes the top-performing distributors within Mack’s North American dealer network. Selection criteria include sales, facilities, personnel, service, parts, general management, customer satisfaction and community service. TransEdge owners Bob and Judy Dwyer opened the Pittsburgh location in 2007 and continue to invest heavily in their facilities and staff as they focus on the TransEdge experience and how to best serve their customers.

Navistar Defense today received a contract for $59 million to deliver 1,357 rocket propelled grenade (RPG) net kits for International® MaxxPro® Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) units in Afghanistan. The order from the U.S. Army TACOM Life Cycle Management Command is considered an urgent buy.

Peterbilt Motors Company awarded the 2011 PACCAR MX Engine Dealer of the Year to the Allstate Peterbilt Group of South St. Paul Minnesota. Don Larson, dealer principal of Allstate Peterbilt, accepted the award at the annual Peterbilt Dealer Meeting, which was held this year in Frisco, TX. “The PACCAR MX Engine Award recognizes the Peterbilt dealership group that provides the best all-around sales and service support of the MX Engine product,” said Bill Kozek, Peterbilt General Manager and PACCAR Vice President.

Western Star marks the 10-Year Anniversary of the Portland manufacturing plant that currently employs more than 1,000 people working two full shifts. The plant produces the full line of Western Star products including the 4700, 4800, 4900 and 6900 truck models that meet the highest standard of comfort, power, convenience and durability.

Volvo Trucks launched its Remote Diagnostics aftermarket service for North America, which provides a seamless, dynamically connected system of vehicle management tools to help maximize vehicle uptime. Remote Diagnostics will be standard on all Volvo-powered VN model highway trucks. Volvo Trucks’ remote diagnostics maximizes vehicle uptime by keeping customers connected.

David H. Martin Excavating, in business for over 40 years, submitted a great photo of four J&J dump bodies that were mounted on chassis provided by Hunter Keystone Peterbilt in Lancaster, Pa. J&J body types were DynaHauler Material Haulers (MH) and Semi-Ellipticals (SE). The company has a fleet of over 50 dump trucks and provides a wide variety of excavating and construction services.

Sterlingwood Trucking, a Pennsylvania-based company, sent J&J a photo of their new J&J Semi-Elliptical dump body (chassis was purchased from Hunter Truck Sales in Butler, Pa). The DynaHauler SE dump body is designed to absorb impact, maximize volume and payloads, and stand up to a constant diet of big rock.

Hauling  Water in North Dakota

Four brightly painted J&J water transport tank trailers were sent to North Dakota to work in the Bakken Formation. The Bakken Shale Oil field, which stretches down from Canada into North Dakota and Montana could hold over 4 billion barrels of oil reserves. This would make the Formation the largest oil discovery in the U.S. next to the oil fields in Alaska. The U.S. Geological Survey calls this rich oil deposit the largest continuous oil accumulation it has ever assessed. Not all vacuum trailers are created equal. Tri County Motor Sales provided the International chassis and J&J installed a heavy-duty aluminum flat bed and a Hiab knuckle boom crane. The flat bed is 22 feet, 4 inches long and 96 inches wide. It has groove hardwood flooring and a 40 inch high structural aluminum bulkhead. The crane was installed directly behind the cab and the telescopic outriggers extend to 14 feet, 9 inches. New Trucks  for Port Authority

A local government agency will use these trucks to perform field service on construction and transportation equipment. Interior drawers and shelving units provide maximum storage space and enclosed cargo areas protect and secure tools and equipment. The overhead racks are used to carry ladders, pipe, and other supplies needed on the job site. Walsh Equipment, a J&J Truck Equipment authorized distributor, provided the Ford trucks.

Refueler  Headed for Mauritania

J&J Truck Equipment provided a semi-elliptical, 5,000 gallon tank for our customer’s Western Star chassis. The truck was sent to Mauritania where it will be used to fuel other equipment and vehicles at a gold mine. Pumps, meters, and hoses are safely stored and easily accessible.
