A Letter from Bill Riggs: Looking to the Future

"Just waiting for the sun"... that's what it can seem like to a manufacturer doing business in the snowy mountains of Pennsylvania. However, the J&J staff has been hard at it, starting 2014 project work, improving manufacturing processes, and ramping up for a strong spring. J&J and JJTE backlogs are building, with the energy sector and construction projects driving demand. Approval of federal and state money for road and infrastructure projects along with increases in drilling, mid-stream projects, and energy services has spurred confidence in capital equipment purchases.

J&J is committed to Continuous Improvement as one of the foundational elements of our quality policy and driver of Customer Satisfaction. An example of Continuous Improvement is J&J's 6S and Lean Cell program. In 2013, J&J invested heavily in tooling and cell design for four chassis integration lines (14 work cells) in the main dump body plant. The end result was work cells with common toolboxes, tooling and fabrication equipment, optimized for the installation of hydraulic systems, chassis controls, suspension and frame modification work. Technicians can be moved to any of the four integration lines and are immediately familiar with the location of all tools and the equipment needed to perform the task at hand.

In 2014, J&J will be investing heavily again in other key manufacturing processes to achieve greater efficiencies. How does this help me? When things are "rocking and rolling" this spring and you need to turn trucks, J&J processes are optimized to get your truck in and out, helping you meet your contract or customer commitments.

Typically J&J "builds and ships" dump bodies to authorized distributor, Bradco Supply, so we were happy that we were able to snap a couple of shots after one of the J&J light-duty dump bodies was mounted on a Ford truck at their facility in Towanda, PA.

Hunter Keystone Peterbilt submitted this great photo on behalf of their customer, Rodota Trucking & Excavating. The trucks are mounted with polished aluminum J&J Materials Hauler (MH) dump bodies.

The Long Hauler Turns 15

Fifteen years ago, J&J Truck Bodies & Trailers published its first issue of The Long Hauler. According to Shahira Hoffman, Marketing Communications Manager, "Back then, we started with a very modest circulation of 2,265. Over the years we have grown our lists, and currently, the distribution is close to 17,000. The Long Hauler has been an excellent way for J&J to communicate with our customers, prospects, distributors, and suppliers. The quarterly newsletter is an important part of J&J's direct marketing initiative and is a collaborative team effort. Throughout the years, we've been very happy with the positive feedback we have received regarding our content and pictures. The Long Hauler also demonstrates J&J's commitment to our industry and the customers we serve."

In addition to publishing The Long Hauler, Shahira also maintains J&J's Facebook page which was created in 2010, making J&J one of the very first body companies to secure a social media presence.

Steel Push Out Trailer (SPO)

J&J Truck Bodies & Trailers is one of the few companies that manufactures push out trailers. We recently completed one for New Boston, NH which they will use for waste hauling applications. Push out trailers eject payloads horizontally, eliminating the problem of tipping or rollovers at landfills that oftentimes have uneven terrain. The trailer's ejector ram is powered by the tractor's hydraulic system.

News Bytes from J&J OEM Partners

Caterpillar introduced stainless steel fluid ends to their XD line of gas and oil well stimulation pumps and fluid ends. Stainless steel brings "numerous benefits, including improved corrosion resistance, reduced incidents of cracking due to corrosion, and improved overall durability," says Scott Roberts, CAT's well service product marketing manager. Customers cite Caterpillar's product reliability and the committed support of its worldwide dealer network as keys to their businesses' success.

Freightliner Trucks announced that it now offers twin steer chassis prep kits for its 114SD and 122SD trucks. The kits will serve to quickly facilitate aftermarket conversions and installation of second steer axle and heavy-duty suspensions, resulting in faster delivery to the customer. Twin steer chassis provides a stable platform for increased truck efficiency and performance and is just one of many options available for the Freightliner Trucks line of severe duty products.

Hino Trucks' mobile app is designed to provide customers with personalized access to Hino's nationwide dealer network. This free app offers useful tools for drivers, including a Dealer Locator, Roadside Assistance, Quick Specs, and Specials. This app is available now through the Apple Store and Google Play.

Kenworth Truck Company announced it will make Bendix ABD 22X front air disc brakes standard on Kenworth Class 8 trucks. These brakes have a two-pin floating caliper design that provides a more consistent force distribution. "Customers appreciate their superior performance, car-like feel, ease of maintenance, and lightweight design," said Kurt Swihard, Kenworth marketing director. The air disc brakes are standard with an aluminum hub and splined disc rotor assembly.

Mack Trucks continues to invest in training for future technicians. Students enrolled in WyoTech's Diesel Advanced Technology Education for Mack Trucks program in Blairsville, PA, are eligible to receive scholarships from Mack Trucks in preparation for positions servicing and repairing Mack trucks. All students receive specialized training on Mack engines, electronics, emissions, powertrain and chassis components and graduate as apprentices with a potential for master technician status. Mack Trucks' own training program recently took home a Gold Award, often called an "academy award," for its certification program.

Navistar, Inc. recently announced that it has started customer shipments of its first International DuraStar vehicles with the Cummins ISB 6.7-liter engine. Initial customers include Budget Truck Rental, Idealease and Penske. The DuraStar is available with a broad array of specs in the medium-duty industry and is available in many horsepower and torque ranges.

Peterbilt Motors Company received the highest honor at the ninth annual Working for Clean Awards from the North Texas Commission. "We're extremely pleased to be recognized by the North Texas Commission for our commitment to continuously improve Peterbilt's environmental stewardship throughout all of our operations at all of our locations," said Darrin Siver, Peterbilt General Manager and PACCAR Vice President. Prior to the awards ceremony, attendees were able to view several clean air vehicles. Peterbilt displayed a natural gas powered vehicle for attendees to learn about this technology and its environmental benefits.

Volvo Trucks recently welcomed Volvo Truck dealers and fleet representatives to their New River Valley assembly plant in Dublin, VA, where they were able to see the construction of a Customer Experience Track. The Track is slated to open in late 2014 and will feature a 1.1-mile paved road course and an off-highway area, allowing Volvo to showcase its entire Class 8 lineup during customer tours and other events. The course is designed to simulate a variety of work environments.

Western Star Trucks announced the availability of its 4800SB all-wheel drive model in an 8x8 axle configuration. Complementing Western Star's rugged 4800 model lineup, the new configuration provides additional traction for the most extreme off-road conditions and is equipped with a two-speed transfer case. Spec'd with a 57k-lbs tridem rear and a 23k-lbs front axle, the 4800SB 8x8 AWD is ideal for customers operating heavy equipment. It is available with power ratings from 350 to 470 hp and 1250 to 1650 lb-ft of torque.
